Baptism for babies and children takes place in a service often called a Christening. In this service parents thank God for this gift of life, make a decision to start their child on a journey of faith and godparents promise help and support.
At St James it is always a delight to welcome a young family into the life of our church. The church also promises to welcome the child and to pray for the family.
Baptism is a very profound and exciting step - it can also be a life-changing experience for all involved. It is just the first step on a journey of faith. It is not something which is 'done' to a baby who is then left to their own devices. You would not put a young child on a train or bus and let them take that journey by themselves. Likewise it is hoped that both the parents and godparents will keep in mind the promises made in a baptism service and help the child on their Christian journey and a life-long relationship with Christ and the Christian faith.
Baptisms at St James take place on a Sunday, normally at 12.30pm. There is no charge for the service; if you wish, a donation can be made on the day.
To be baptised at St James you need to either live in the parish or have special connection. Please do get in contact if you would like further details.
